The city was founded around 1000 BC and became a significant center of culture, trade, and religion in the Hellenistic period. Perge was strategically located on a trade route between the eastern Mediterranean and the interior of Asia Minor. Its position allowed it to become a vital trading hub for goods such as textiles, spices, and precious metals. The city's prosperity was also attributed to its fertile agricultural land, which produced olives, grapes, and grain. In the 4th century BC, Perge came under the control of the Persians before being conquered by Alexander the Great. Under Greek rule, the city flourished as a cultural center, with prominent philosophers, poets, and artists calling it home. The city's most significant architectural achievement was its theater, which could seat up to 12,000 spectators. Perge was also a center of religious activity, with temples dedicated to Artemis, Apollo, and Zeus. The city's patron goddess was Artemis, and her temple was one of the most prominent structures in Perge. The temple had a grand entrance with columns and was adorned with elaborate sculptures and reliefs. During the Roman period, Perge continued to prosper, and the city was expanded with new public buildings and infrastructure. The Romans also added their own religious monuments, including a large stadium and a bath complex. Perge's decline began in the 6th century AD when it was attacked by the Persians and then later by Arab invaders. The city was abandoned and fell into ruin, with its buildings and monuments falling prey to the elements and looters. Today, visitors to Perge can explore the ancient city's ruins, which include the theater, agora, and Roman baths. The city's stadium, which could hold up to 15,000 spectators, is also well-preserved and provides a glimpse into the city's sporting events. The Temple of Artemis, while not completely intact, still displays impressive sculptures and reliefs, providing a sense of the grandeur that the temple once possessed. The Hellenistic Gate, which marks the entrance to the ancient city, is another must-see attraction, with its intricate carvings and grand arches. Overall, Perge remains an essential site for those interested in ancient history and architecture. Its rich history and well-preserved ruins provide a window into a once-great city that played a crucial role in the development of the eastern Mediterranean region. =========================== 🤞 Thanks for watching and reading! 🌐 Follow me: https://www.tiktok.com/@andreys_walks https://www.instagram.com/andrew.franch/
